The Virginia General Assembly took action in the 2016 legislative session to provide more tools for fighting the prescription drug abuse crisis in the Commonwealth. Notably, lawmakers extended access of the State Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) to consulting pharmacists as of July 1. Cordant Health Solutions, a VHHA Shared Services-endorsed Medication Monitoring Company, will now offer VHHA members through its Closed Loop Program, toxicology results along with a 22-point risk assessment review by a Virginia licensed pharmacist. The pharmacist will have a signed agreement in place with the provider which specifies that the pharmacist will review the PMP only upon request regarding specific patients. The subsequent report back to the provider identifying high risk factors like drug seeking behavior, high Morphine Equivalent Daily Dose (MEDD) and possible fatal drug interactions will help protect physicians, hospitals, and patients in Virginia. In addition, Cordant offers VHHA members actionable analytics that can give visibility to hospital, prescriber, and patient risk. This improvement helps identify red flags and focus areas to enhance best practices.
