Merritt Hawkins’ 2017 Survey on Physician Appointment Wait Times Now Available

Merritt Hawkins’ 2017 Survey of Physician Appointment Wait Times and Medicare and Medicaid Acceptance Rates is now available. The survey examines the time it takes to schedule a new patient physician appointment in 15 major U.S. metropolitan areas, finding wait times have increased 30 percent since 2014. The survey of 1,414 physician offices tracks average new patient appointment wait times in five different medical specialties: cardiology, dermatology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedic surgery, and family medicine. The 2017 survey also marks the first time Merritt Hawkins tracked the average new patient physician appointment wait times in 15 mid-sized metropolitan areas with populations of 90,000-140,000 people. For the first time, Virginia is included in the survey with wait time information for Hampton. To obtain a copy of the survey, please contact Joe Spivey at
