Merritt Hawkins’ annual Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives report is now available. Now in its twenty-fourth year, the publication that is the most comprehensive report on physician recruiting incentives in the industry is available to VHHA members. The extensive report highlights which physician types are most in demand, current starting salaries for physicians, signing bonuses, production bonuses, and related information. For the eleventh consecutive year, family physicians topped the list of most highly recruited physicians, followed by psychiatrists, internists, OB/GYNs, and hospitalists. The use of value-based incentives has increased, but physicians are still largely rewarded on volume, and more than 90 percent are recruited into employed, rather than independent practice, settings. In addition, 55 percent of Merritt Hawkins’ search assignments last year took place in communities with more than 100,000 people, suggesting physician shortages are not confined to traditionally underserved rural areas. The report is a vital educational resource for hospital executives on physician recruiting incentives.
